Job Summary:

Core responsibilities of this position include:

Specialist, Grounds I position is a part-time non-benefitted position responsible for ensuring the safety, cleanliness, and visual appeal of outdoor spaces through tasks such as landscaping, lawn care, snow removal. The Specialist, Grounds I, operates equipment, performs routine maintenance, and collaborates with facilities staff to support a well-maintained, welcoming campus environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors. This position will perform on-call duties on a rotating basis.

 

Other tasks may be assigned based on contemporary institutional need.

 

Compensation: Starting wage is $18.41, commensurate with experience.

 

Priority Screening Date: Position is open until filled. This is a part-time temporary, non-benefited appointment to temporarily fill this position while the permanent employee is out on extended leave. This temporary position will last until the permanent employee returns or three months from the start date.

Responsibilities

Essential Functions: – this position non-exempt and is eligible for compensatory or overtime pay provisions of the FLSA.  This listing of essential duties is not all-inclusive, but representative, other duties may be assigned).

  • Ensure the upkeep and appearance of campus grounds by performing landscaping, lawn care, irrigation management, and seasonal maintenance tasks to maintain a safe and aesthetically pleasing environment.
  • Ensure equipment maintenance by conducting regular inspections, performing necessary repairs, and coordinating preventative maintenance schedules to maximize operational efficiency.
  • Ensure grounds safety and compliance by adhering to policies and procedures, conducting regular inspections, and addressing potential risks to maintain a secure and well-regulated campus environment.
  • Provide support in other facility areas by assisting with maintenance tasks, coordinating resources, and ensuring operational efficiency across departments.
  • Maintain up-to-date expertise by actively participating in trainings and professional development opportunities and applying new knowledge to improve job performance and support institutional goals.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: 

Knowledge

  • Knowledge of plant care, pruning, fertilization, pest control, and landscape design.
  • Knowledge of OSHA requirements and building code regulations; ability to learn, interpret and apply current pertinent federal, state and local laws and regulations.
  • Familiarity with tools and machinery such as mowers, trimmers, and snow removal equipment.
  • Knowledge of irrigation installation, maintenance and repair. 

Skills

  • Safely and efficiently operate and repair a wide range of groundskeeping machinery and tools.
  • Must be able to drive vehicles and operate large complex maintenance equipment.
  • Proficient in computer-based training software, Microsoft Office Suite, Microsoft Outlook, and other relevant software applications to effectively complete job tasks.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including the capacity to convey complex information clearly.
  • Effectively prioritize tasks and manage time to complete maintenance and landscaping work on schedule.

Abilities

  • Capable of managing daily tasks with minimal supervision while collaborating with colleagues on larger projects.
  • Ability to read and interpret instructions in oral, written, or diagrammatical form (e.g., a flow chart of a process).
  • Ability to support time-based requests; able to function effectively in a multi-tasking, fast-paced environment with deadlines, frequent interruptions, and some interpersonal pressure.
  • Capable of representing the organization in a professional manner, adapting to various situations with maturity, and maintaining confidentiality and discretion at all times.
  • Ability to carry out physical tasks such as mowing, digging, planting, and snow removal over extended periods.

 PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS: 

  • While performing the essential functions of this position a variable work schedule may be required.
  • While performing the essential duties of this position, an employee would frequently be required to move around the assigned work areas as well as within hallways, meeting rooms, and other parts of the campus facilities.
  • There may be multiple/daily instances of prolonged sitting, standing, and personal computer use, which would include keyboard and/or mouse usage as well as viewing a computer monitor.
  • An employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds to perform essential position functions. Will be required to climb ladders maneuver in confined spaces and work with tools/equipment in unconventional positions.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, and ability to adjust focus.
  • The overall work environment requires the mental ability to shift focal point quickly due to interruptions; an employee must be able to mentally track multiple projects and tasking as well.
  • Exposure to hazardous materials, chemicals and fuels/ petroleum products.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate; however, there may be instances of somewhat loud environments when working with assembly tools or in server environments.
  • An employee must be able to bend, stretch, twist, or reach with your body, arms, and/or legs.
  • An employee must be able to move about on foot for extended periods of time.
  • An employee must be able to perform the job mainly outdoors but occasionally work in confined spaces. 
  • An employee must be able to transition between stationary tasks and activities to frequent movement activities quickly and as needed.

Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

 

Minimum Qualifications:   

  • High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and be able to meet the college insurance carrier requirements.
  • One year of experience working in grounds maintenance.
  • Possess a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).

Preferred Qualifications:   

  • Two years of experience maintaining irrigations systems including piping and controls
  • Two years of experience servicing and providing minor repairs to equipment and power tools.
  • One year of experience operating large equipment requiring Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
  • Ability to obtain and maintain Pesticide Applicators License.
