Job Summary:

 

The Learning Commons Tutor is a part-time, non-benefited position in the Ludden Library and Learning Commons, total work hours not to exceed 79 hours per month. This position provides direct, high-impact academic support to LCCC students by helping struggling students understand difficult course material, complete their homework, set academic goals, and increase their study, test-taking, learning, technology, and college success skills through one-on-one and small group tutoring, online tutoring, workshops, and class presentations. Tutors facilitate independent, active learning and increase student learning confidence: They introduce study and learning strategies, guide students’ understanding of course content, and help students learn to answer their own questions or solve problems. The position requires individuals with excellent communication, creativity, and leadership abilities. All tutoring is conducted in a structured and supervised environment on the LCCC campus. Tutors provide excellent customer service to students, foster relationships with students, increase campus awareness of Learning Commons programs and initiatives, and perform other duties related to the Learning Commons as assigned.

Start Date: As soon as practical after the screening and interview process. 

 

Compensation: $13.33 per hour, commensurate with education and experience. 

 

Responsibilities

Essential Functions:  – this position is Non-Exempt, i.e., is eligible for compensatory or overtime pay provisions of the FLSA.  This listing of essential duties is not all-inclusive, but representative; other duties may be assigned).

  • Assist individual and small groups of students via Zoom and/or in-person in scheduled and walk-in visits to address students’ course material and homework concerns, learning needs, and learning confidence
  • Utilize and model a range of creative learning approaches and strategies to promote students’ academic success skills development; this includes helping students with study, test-taking, time management, organization, goal setting, note-taking, and reading comprehension skills, among others
  • Work with fellow tutors, writing consultants, PASS leaders, Lead Tutors, and the Director of the Learning Commons to develop innovative initiatives to increase student and college awareness of Learning Commons programs and students’ academic skills development
  • Provide excellent customer service to Learning Commons patrons, including, but not limited to, answering questions and making appropriate referrals regarding Learning Commons services to all students, prospective students, faculty, staff, or others who contact the Learning Commons
  • Demonstrate appropriate professional demeanor with all faculty, staff, students, and other Learning Commons patrons
  • Model professional attitude regarding class standards and grading policies; abide by LCCC Academic Honesty and Honor Code in all student and patron interactions
  • Maintain accurate and complete scheduling and visit records, including attendance, assessment forms, and post-visit reports, for every visit through online management systems
  • Attend all tutor/writing consultant/PASS leader training sessions and meetings as required; work towards and obtain tutor certifications as required
  • Schedule tutoring sessions for all tutors and writing consultants through online management system
  • Prepare, assemble, write, revise, edit, and format unit publications, including student handouts, informational materials, and/or website material, ensuring all materials meet established standards of appearance and content
  • Train Front Desk person to assist students and other patrons with navigating online systems 
  • Lead class presentations and workshops on Learning Commons services, specific learning and academic success skills, and subject-specific material
  • When not assisting students or presenting in a class, complete other Director-assigned downtime projects for the Learning Commons
  • Provide advance notice to the Director of the Learning Commons, Lead Tutors, fellow tutors and writing consultants, and scheduled students when tutoring sessions and/or shifts must be canceled
  • Design and complete marketing materials for the Learning Commons, as assigned
  • Refer students to other support services as necessary
  • Maintain confidentiality about tutoring sessions and students
  • Perform administrative functions in the Learning Commons
  • Perform other Director-assigned duties as required

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Proficiency in the courses to be tutored, as described above
  • Excellent writing, oral communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to create, utilize, and model creative pedagogical/andragogical/teaching approaches and strategies
  • Ability to support time-based requests; able to function effectively in a multi-tasking, fast-paced environment with deadlines, frequent interruptions, and some interpersonal pressure
  • Ability to relate course content to real life scenarios
  • Ability to analyze strengths and weaknesses in individual students’ course-content understanding, time management, study and learning strategies, and project management skills
  • Ability to synthesize study, academic success, skills necessary to succeed in the course/paper/assignment/project
  • Ability to facilitate individual and small group discussion and learning
  • Enthusiasm, patience, persistence, reliability, consistency, and adaptability
  • Ability to complete assigned responsibilities by the deadlines provided and meet performance expectations
  • Ability to read and interpret instructions in oral, written, or diagrammatical form (e.g., a flow chart of a process)
  • Ability to read, interpret and consider possible applications of course material, assignments, citation systems, and applicable documents
  • Excellent customer service skills; ability to communicate clearly with a variety of people, in one-to-one and small group settings – either face-to-face, online, or by other remote means – ability to communicate in an informative manner, effectively listen, and be able to handle escalating situations with concern and confidence
  • Ability to deal effectively and professionally with people; proven capabilities in establishing appropriate professional rapport, with courtesy and tact, to accurately determine others’ needs, collect necessary information, and follow-through when requested
  • Knowledge and use of linguistic flexibility (active listening, explaining, evaluating, etc.)
  • Ability to learn new computer systems, programs, databases, and technology
  • Knowledge of basic office equipment including (but not limited to) personal computer and associated peripherals, fax machine, multi-line telephone, voice recorders, and other electronic devices

  • The ability to comply with highly inflexible deadlines is required to successfully perform the essential functions of this position; there will be multiple occurrences of sudden, urgent task completion required
  • While performing the essential functions of this position, a variable work schedule may be required, including long work days, evenings, and weekends as needed
  • There may be occurrences of interacting with employees and/or students, past employees and/or students, members of the general public, and others who express opinions, may exhibit strong emotions, which will require the employee to interact professionally, diplomatically, and appropriately in such situations
  • While performing the essential duties of this position on campus, an employee would frequently be required to move around the assigned work areas as well as within hallways, meeting rooms, and other parts of the campus facilities
  • There may be multiple/daily instances of prolonged sitting, standing, and personal computer use, which would include keyboard and/or mouse usage as well as viewing a computer monitor
  • An employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 35 pounds to perform essential position functions
  • Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, and ability to adjust focus
  • The overall work environment requires the mental ability to shift focal point quickly due to interruptions; an employee must be able to mentally track multiple projects and tasking as well
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate; however, there may be unexpected instances of somewhat loud sounds

Qualifications

 Minimum:

  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 and minimum GPA of 3.3 in college courses related to the subject to be tutored
  • Completion of at least 15 hours of college course credit or at least one (1) year of related employment experience in a field closely related to the subject(s) to be tutored

Preferred:

  • One year of previous experience as a tutor or instructor
  • One semester of previous experience with the course to be tutored and the instructor(s) of the course
  • At least 30 credit hours of successful post-secondary education
