Overview

This is a part-time, temporary position. This position is only available for LCCC students enrolled in at least 6 credit hours for the Spring 2024/Summer 2024 semester and students who are eligible for Federal Work Study.

 

Job Summary:

 

Participating in the care and maintenance of the College grounds maintenance program. Clean and assist in servicing vehicles and equipment as needed; prepares vehicle and tools for work assignments daily. Daily maintenance and cleaning of work areas. Watering and pruning of trees and shrubs. Mowing, edging, and trimming of turf and outlying areas. Irrigation repair as needed. Planting and ongoing care of trees, shrubs and flowers. Small construction projects to upgrade areas around campus. Snow removal as needed.

 

Compensation: $13.99/hr. Commensurate with experience. 

 

Screening Date: Position open until filled.

 

Start Date: As soon after screening as practical. Semester: Spring/2024 - Summer/2024.

 

Responsibilities

Essential Functions:– this position is Non-exempt , is eligible for compensatory or overtime pay provisions of the FLSA.  This listing of essential duties is not all-inclusive, but representative, other duties may be assigned.

  • Ability to operate hand shovel, broom, weed eater, mower
  • Involved in keeping the grounds clean and free of hazards, trash and tumbleweed abatement
  • Have knowledge of tree and shrub pruning
  • Have some mechanical skills and be willing to learn and assist in basic servicing of equipment
  •  Have basic of knowledge of tree and flower care and some basic recognition of weeds
  •  Follows OSHA and college safety practice regulations and procedures
  •  Provides excellent customer service by utilizing professional and effective language to communicate

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of and ability to perform proper methods of planting and maintenance on all types of plant material.
  • Ability to properly and safely operate equipment/power tools used in installation and maintenance tasks.
  • Knowledge of OSHA requirements and building code regulations; ability to learn, interpret and apply current pertinent federal, state and local laws and regulations.
  • Ability to read and interpret instructions in oral, written, or diagrammatical form (e.g., a flow chart of a process).
  • Excellent customer service skills; ability to communicate clearly with a variety of people, in one-to-one and small group settings – either face-to-face, by telephone, or by other electronic means – ability to communicate in an informative manner, effectively listen, and be able to handle escalating situations with concern and confidence.
  • Ability to support time-based requests; able to function effectively in a multi-tasking, fast-paced environment with deadlines, frequent interruptions, and some interpersonal pressure.
  • Ability to deal effectively and professionally with people; proven capabilities in establishing appropriate professional rapport, with courtesy and tact, to accurately determine other’s needs, collect necessary information, and follow-through when requested.

Physical/Mental Demands:

  • While performing the essential duties of this position, an employee would frequently be required to move around the assigned work space as well as within hallways, meeting rooms, and other parts of the campus facilities
  • Exposure to outdoor weather extremes for extended periods of time
  • There may be multiple/daily instances of prolonged personal computer use which would include keyboard  and/or mouse usage as well as viewing a computer monitor
  • Exposure to hazardous materials, chemicals and fuels/ petroleum products
  • An employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds to perform essential position functions
  • Will be required to climb ladders maneuver in confined spaces and work with tools/equipment in unconventional positions
  • Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, and ability to adjust focus
  • The overall work environment requires the mental ability to shift focal point quickly due to interruptions; an employee must be able to mentally track multiple projects and tasking as well
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate; however, there may be unexpected instances of somewhat loud sounds

Qualifications

Minimum:

  • Related experience such as grounds work including snow removal, equipment operation, maintenance and repair or related outdoor work
  • Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain one, and be able to meet college insurance carrier requirements
  • Must be a current LCCC student enrolled in at least 6 credit hours for the Fall 2023 or Spring 2024 semester (depending on the time of employment) and are eligible for Federal Work Study.
