This position is only available for LCCC students enrolled in at least 6 credit hours for the current semester.

Job Summary Core responsibilities of this position include:

The Student Stall Assistant is a part-time, non-benefitted position that requires enrollment as an LCCC student. This position is responsible for supporting the overall operations of LCCC Barn and Arena Facilities through the direction of supervising staff. Responsibilities include but are not limited too cleaning of livestock and equine stalls, pins, and arena facilitates; feeding of livestock and horses according to established schedules; maintaining equipment, facilities, and arena floor; and supporting the care and doctoring of livestock; setting up and preparing for events; and overall supporting the functions of the department. Individuals in this position are expected to represent the Department and LCCC in a professional manner and adhere to applicable policies and procedures.

 

Other tasks may be assigned based on contemporary institutional need.

 

Screening Date: Position open until filled, screening to begin immediately.

 

Start Date: Spring/2024.

 

Compensation:  $15.03/hr.

Responsibilities

Essential Functions:

This position supports the overall operations of the Agriculture and Equine Facilities under supervision for FT staff, responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Clean live stock pins, stalls, shelters, and other designated areas; remove manure and bedding and transport to the appropriate disposal area
  • Clean general areas of the arena and agriculture facilities as instructed
  • Perform feeding of Livestock and Horses according to preestablished schedules and area practices
  • Haul-lift, transport, and stack hay, feed, and supplies as instructed
  • Perform general care, cleaning, and assist with doctoring/vaccinations of livestock and horses
  • Perform routine maintenance and minor repairs to equipment, shelters, fencing, and facilities
  • Work with livestock in moving animals from holding areas to the arena, trailers, veterinarian room and agriculture facilities
  • Select individuals in this position may be trained to operate campus equipment such as tractors, motorized carts, and skid steers
  • Support the department with special projects through completing tasks as assigned
  • Communicate and plan accordingly with the assigned supervisor to develop and establish a work schedule for the semester
  • Promptly communicate any changes to established schedules and seek advanced approval for known schedule conflicts or requests
  • Notify and elevate concerns to the appropriate supervisor regarding any issues, barriers, or concerns regarding task completion, customer concerns, or the general work environment
  • This position must follow all College and department and safety procedures and use the required safety equipment
  • Other duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge and ability to work in an agricultural setting including around livestock and related equipment
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality standards
  • Ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with area supervisor to resolve work and college course scheduling conflicts
  • Ability to read and interpret instructions in oral, written, or diagrammatical form (e.g., a flow chart of a process)
  • Ability to communicate in an informative manner and effectively listen
  • Ability to support time-based requests; able to function effectively in a multi-tasking, fast-paced environment with deadlines and frequent interruptions
  • Ability to respond to basic inquiries from faculty, staff, or other students
  • Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle; must have a valid driver’s license and a driving record that meets the requirements for and provides the ability to be insured by the college’s insurance provider
  • Knowledge of basic tools and equipment associated with working in an agricultural environment
  • Ability to drive vehicles, and operate maintenance equipment

Physical/Mental Demands: 

  • To successfully perform the essential functions of this position, an employee must be able to maintain appropriate composure and necessary confidentiality with regard to both past and current employee, student, and donor data; documents; issues; etc., and respect privacy needs of employees, students, donors
  • The ability to comply with highly inflexible deadlines is required to successfully perform the essential functions of this position; there will be multiple occurrences of sudden, urgent task completion required
  • While performing the essential functions of this position a variable work schedule may be required including long workdays, evenings, and weekends as needed
  • There may be occurrences of interacting with employees and/or students, past employees and/or students, members of the general public, and others who express opinions, may exhibit strong emotions, which will require the employee to interact professionally, diplomatically, and appropriately in such situations
  • While performing the essential duties of this position, an employee would frequently be required to move around the assigned work areas as well as within hallways, meeting rooms, and other parts of the campus facilities
  • There may be multiple/daily instances of prolonged sitting, standing, climbing, lifting, twisting, working with hand tools, and personal computer use, which would include keyboard and/or mouse usage as well as viewing a computer monitor
  • An employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds; a team lift technique is required for lifts exceeding 50 pounds
  • Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, and ability to adjust focus
  • The overall work environment requires the mental ability to shift focal point quickly due to interruptions; an employee must be able to mentally track multiple projects and tasking as well
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate; however, there may be unexpected instances of somewhat loud sounds
  • Ability to function in an agriculture environment with substantial animal exposure and without any allergic reactions.
  • Ability to work in an industrial/agricultural setting including but not limited to working in confined spaces, with or near complex machines, and chemicals; appropriate safety precautions, equipment, and procedures must be utilized at all times

Qualifications

Minimum:

  • Highschool Diploma, GED, or equivalent
  • Admission at LCCC and continued enrollment in a minimum of 6 credits a semester (exceptions may be given for summer term with supervisor approval)
  • Valid Driver’s License and ability to be insured by the College’s insurance provider

Preferred:

  • Prior experience working in an Agriculture setting
