Job Summary: Core responsibilities of this position include: Provide quality learning opportunities that assist the student to meet their educational goals and career aspirations in the accredited Surgical Technology program which includes both the Surgical Technology AAS degree. Deliver student-centered, hands-on, active instruction in didactic and laboratory courses. Serve on various committees, participate in professional development, coordinate and/or participate in school-based community events and service-learning activities; work collaboratively as a member of the program team in assessment and continuous improvement activities.
Other tasks may be assigned based on contemporary institutional need.

 

Starting Date: Position is open until filled

 

Compensation: $850 per credit hour.

 

Responsibilities

Must be responsible for organization, administration, continuous review, planning development, and general effectiveness of clinical experiences for students enrolled in the surgical technology program.

Teaching:

  • Teach assigned courses as directed by the Surgical Technology Program Director or Dean
  • Assist with the review, revision, and creation of course materials 
  • Prepare and maintain classroom or/and lab facilities
  • Adhere to the approved Master Course Outline of Record (MCOR) for each assigned course 
  • Provide a copy of course syllabi to the program director and HSW school prior to the first day of classes
  • Review the course syllabus with students on the first day of class 
  • Meet classes punctually, for the specified time, and utilize appropriate teaching techniques and methods for classroom and/or online instruction
  • Evaluate students' performance fairly and consistently
  • Return student work promptly (within a week) to promote maximum learning
  • Assign and submit grades to program and institutional entities as required by college policy
  • Maintain complete and accurate records of students' performance and attendance as required by law
  • Promote student retention
  • Attend the Surgical Technology Advisory Committee meetings 

 

All instructors are expected to:

  • Maintain current knowledge and abilities               
  • Attend or participate in workshops, conferences, or seminars related to one's field or to meet accreditation standards
  • Actively participate in maintaining program accreditation and Higher Learning Commission (HLC) requirements

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Demonstrate professional knowledge of discipline and changes in the field
  • Apply appropriate teaching techniques and methods in classroom and/or online instruction
  • Promote student retention
  • Display a professional demeanor and exhibit good work ethic
  • Establish a student-instructor relationship conducive to learning and promote active involvement of students in learning activities 
  • Demonstrate strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community
  • Teach course content that is consistent with the official course outline of record and use pertinent course materials at an appropriate level
  • Demonstrate collaboration, cooperation and sensitivity in working with colleagues and staff in both the clinical and campus settings
  • Computer competency

Physical/Mental Demands: 

  • Stand, bend, stoop, and/or sit for long periods of time in one location with minimal or no breaks
  • Bend, twist, and lift a minimum of 50 pounds
  • Function for long periods of time without a break
  • Demonstrate sufficient peripheral vision to anticipate and function while in the sterile surgical environment
  • Hear and understand muffled communication without visualization of the communicator’s mouth/lips, with significant background noise
  • Hear activation/warning signals on equipment
  • Detect odors sufficient to maintain environmental safety and patient needs
  • Manipulate instruments, supplies, and equipment with speed, dexterity, and exceptional eye-hand coordination
  • Ambulate/move around without assistive devices
  • Assist with, and/or lift, move, position, and manipulate, with or without assistive devices, the patient who is unconscious
  • Communicate and understand fluent English both verbally and in writing
  • Be free of reportable communicable diseases and chemical abuse
  • Function without allergic reaction in an environment with substantial latex exposure
  • Demonstrate immunity to rubella, rubeola, tuberculosis, varicella, hepatitis B, and other diseases as required by the clinical facilities
  • Possess short- and long-term memory sufficient to perform tasks such as, but not limited to, mentally tracking surgical supplies and performing anticipation skills intraoperatively
  • Demonstrate the use of positive coping skills under stress
  • Demonstrate calm and effective responses, especially in emergency situations
  • Exhibit positive interpersonal skills in patient, staff, and faculty interactions
  • Make appropriate judgment decisions

Qualifications

Minimum:

  • Must possess a credential in the field of surgical technology through a national certification program that is accredited by the National Commission of Certifying Agencies (NCCA)
  • Must have a minimum of two (2) years of current experience in the operating room scrub role or
  • Two (2) years of current experience as an instructor of surgical technology or a combination of both within the last five (5) years.

Preferred:

  • Associate's degree or higher in Surgical Technology
